Digital Photos

Terry Grogan

Ok, here's my favorite week! I love macro shooting - especially of bugs or other small things. I had fun with this week's lesson. I learned a few things (like why I thought my Kodak "point and shoot" digital camera was "broken" because the macro photos were all cut off - I never realized the difference between what the viewfinder sees and what the Lens sees. I should have used the LCD for macro shots with it).
My 18-55mm zoom lens has a closest shooting distance of about 11" (.28m) regardless of whether it is on wide angle or telephoto. The two ruler pictures were taken at about 10.5" from the lens. I think I'm going to invest in a diopter ring so I can get closer.

Notice in the zoomed out one you see my hand. This is because my shadow was covering some of the ruler and not the rest of it. I decided to leave this picture in as it illustrates the problem that can sometimes occur with macro shooting as Ron described in the lesson.

I happen to be in the process of selling some coins for my father on eBay. Getting good close up images will be very important. I decided to practice on this Liberty Double Eagle $20 Gold Coin. I'm going to need to get a neutral background and better lighting (from the side) if I really want to show off the coin detail.

This is one of my dog's toys. I made sure I stopped down the aperture so I could get the best depth of field at telephoto. It worked pretty well, even the nose, which sticks out pretty far, is in good focus, as is the hair.

Just to show the contrast, here is a flower taken with the largest aperture setting I could get. The focus was around the middle of the image, but you can see that only that part (a few of the back petals) is really in focus. The rest of it is out of focus, displaying the very narrow depth of field.Shooting Mode - Aperture-Priority AE
